What do I do for prevention of my father from being the victim of elder abuse in his care home?

Upon visiting my father in a care home, I saw that he had several bruises on his chest and arms. When I asked about this, he said he didn't know how they got there.  He is very senile and has a poor memory since he is 85 years old.  I think my father may be the victim of elder abuse and want to stay steps to prevent this from happening in the future.  What should I do about this potential problem?

Elder abuse is the infliction of physical, emotional, or psychological harm on an older adult. Elder abuse also can take the form of financial exploitation or intentional or unintentional neglect of an older adult by the caregiver.

Physical abuse can include hitting, beating, pushing, kicking, pinching, burning, or biting. It can also include such acts against the older person as over- or under-medicating, depriving the elder of food, or exposing the person to severe weather and unsanitary conditions.

The National Association of Area Agencies on Aging is an organization that advocates on behalf of our member agencies (throughout the country) for services and resources for older adults and persons with disabilities.  The may be a good resource to start your research.  You may visit their website to learn about the services in your area.

Moving forward, please consult with an elder lawyer to determine the best course of action to take in your case.
