HHS Assistant Secretary for Aging Josefina G. Carbonell will participate in the 2007 National Prevention and Health Promotion Summit sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday, November 29, 2007 in Washington, D.C.
Assistant Secretary Carbonell will participate in a session entitled “Using Local Partnerships and Evidence-Based Strategies to Reduce Health Disparities Among Hispanic Elders” which will also feature Dr. Carolyn Clancy, Administrator of the HHS Agency for Healthcare Research Quality (AHRQ) and several AoA national network partners who are participating in a pilot project designed to improve the health of Hispanic elders. The metropolitan areas of Chicago, Ill., Houston, Texas; Los Angeles, Calif., McAllen, Texas; Miami, Fla.; New York, NY; San Antonio, Texas; and San Diego, Calif., are taking part in the pilot project launched earlier this year by HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt titled “Improving Hispanic Elders' Health: Community Partnerships for Evidence-Based Solutions.”
Assistant Secretary Carbonell will also share information about AoA’s efforts to partner with HHS agencies, private philanthropy and aging organizations to promote the use of evidence-based disease prevention programs for seniors at the community level.
